Let’s talk about the NATO Summit---and the Counter Summit---both hosted here in Chicago this weekend…

Today, in the post-Cold War world, in a world in which other axes’ of power are emerging---namely the BRICS nations (Brazil/Russia/India/China/South Africa)---is this North American and European alliance necessary? Indeed, is NATO a reflection of the true bases of power in today’s and tomorrow’s world? Or, have times and power bases and realities shifted?

And, in the aftermath of the NATO-led invasion of Libya, do they have as much influence, power, and credibility?

One of today’s guest’s, Dr. Vijay Prashad of Trinity College,  writes: “A United Nations report released in early March 2012 asked for an investigation of NATO’s potential war crimes, but was snubbed by the military alliance…”

They are powerful, but with that power comes the equally weighted responsibility of accountability…

One wonders, with all of their power, to whom are they accountable?

And, what about the protests here in Chicago?

Thousands have descended upon Chicago to for a NATO Counter Summit and protests, but will they be heard?

Chicago's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, has proposed and passed new ordinances targeted at potential protestors---and contrary to the Mayor’s initial statements, these ordinances will be permanent, remaining in effect after the summits are over.

Let’s talk with:

  • Dr. Vijay Prashad
  • Atty. Barbara Arnwine
  • A representative from NATIONAL NURSES UNITED
  • Danny Schechter
  • Dr. Max Wolff
