KEEP HOPE ALIVE with REV. JESSE JACKSON

Co-Host: SANTITA JACKSON

Welcome to another edition of “ KEEP HOPE ALIVE...” and,

“Happy Mother’s Day!”

Today, we will look at the REAL meaning of
MOTHER’S DAY and the state of Mothers today...

Back in 1870 when Mrs. Julia Ward Howe established this
holiday, she named it the “MOTHER’S DAY for PEACE”...

A dedicated abolitionist who wrote the lyrics for the “BATTLE

HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC”---her statement voicing her strong

opposition to slavery and unwavering support for the

Union---Mrs. Howe had equally strong feelings about achieving

and maintaining a peaceful world...And, she believed that ALL

MOTHERS regardless of race, color or creed had a crucial role

in meeting that goal...

And it was in this context that she wrote the “Mother’s

Day Proclamation”.

She wrote:

“Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn

All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy

and patience.

“We, the women of one country, will be too tender of

those of another country

To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

“From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up

with our own.

It says: ‘Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the

balance of justice’"…

What would our society look or be like if the monies that were

applied to wars were applied to education, health, our nation’s

infrastructure?

Mothers need more than HALLMARK cards---they need the

entire social deck to be re-shuffled...

All women make less money than men---and African American
women least of all...If African American mothers are in trouble,
ALL mothers are in trouble: It is just a matter of time...

Just ahead of MOTHER’S DAY, FinanceOnline.com released a
report about the State of the Black American Mother, entitled,
“WILL BLACK AMERICAN MOMS BE CELEBRATING THIS
MOTHER’S DAY?”

This report suggests that African American mothers are

more likely to raise children as a single parent---have less

education---have more uninsured children---are more

prone to divorce---and have the least spending power for

their children...

Ultimately, if the REAL challenges for Black women go

unaddressed, all women AND their children will suffer...

Joining me in-studio, today is noted civil rights lawyer and
minister, Rev. Atty. Janette Wilson of Rainbow/PUSH---and in
the first hour, will be...
